its previous edition, the V Friendship Cup had 16 teams divided into 4
groups. In group A, there were CFZ, Vasco, Corinthians and Ichikawa.
In group B, Botafogo, Cruzeiro, Nova Iguaçu and Kashima Antlers. In
group C, Flamengo, Atlético-MG, Madureira and Tokyo Verdy. And in
group D, Fluminense, Guarani, Bangu and Kashima Norte. The winner of
each group (Corinthians, Botafogo, Flamengo and Guarani) advanced to
the semifinals. In the final match, Corinthians defeated Botafogo by 2
to 0 and took the trophy to São Paulo. Once more coached by Kika, CFZ
won its first two matches against Ichikawa and Vasco. However, in the
group’s decisive encounter, the team was smashed by Corinthians and
gave goodbye to its chances of reaching the title.
